Sometimes Dreams just Need a Chance

March 29, 2012

I told you I attended a conference last week on creating cultures where people can accomplish their dreams.  The conference was inspiring and presented a bunch of new ideas.  Here’s the thing I took from the conference:  Many people have dreams & talents dying to be exposed.  They lack confidence or they fear rejection, so they keep those dreams and talents hidden.  What if we as fathers became dream enablers, rather than dream crushers?  It is easy to tell a young person or our own children all the reasons their dream will not happen (and sometimes it doesn’t). The harder task is to walk in the creative tension of simultaneously encouraging a dream and challenging the dreamer to action.  What is the worst thing that could happen if we encourage dreamers to action?  The worst thing is that they take a few steps towards the dream and realize it is not for them.  That is actually OK.  That is called maturing and growing up.  Our job as fathers is to point to all the stars in the sky, rather than focus on the thunder clouds in the offing.

At the conference, we saw thing video about Paul Potts and his audition on Britain’s Got Talent. Truly inspiring and a reminder that some dream just need a chance.
